ALA Accreditation

The MLIS program at St. Catherine University is accredited by the American Library Association. We are the only accredited MLIS program in Minnesota. Graduating from an ALA-accredited program enhances career mobility, with many employers requiring an ALA-accredited master's degree for professional level positions, and some states requiring an ALA-accredited degree to work as a professional librarian in public or school libraries.

Gain a solid generalist foundation in library and information science through core courses and then specialize through taking advanced electives. You’ll have the option to earn a School Library Media Specialist License (SLMS) on its own, earn a master’s degree with the SLMS license or just earn the MLIS degree.

To obtain a license to be a K-12 school librarian in MN, you must complete a graduate-level program of study. St. Catherine University is one of three universities that offer this.
